Date and time of CAPS investigation: 08/17/2018; 4:57 p.m.

Approximate number of dogs observed at time of investigation: 18 puppies

Puppies were kept in closed topped enclosures on rubber matting. Cage cards on the front of the enclosures gave breed, gender, color and birth date of each puppy. Some enclosures had bedding, some did not. Signs stated that information on the source of the puppies and veterinary care was available to prospective purchasers. A large sign explained where the store sourced puppies from.

I saw an employee removing feces from an enclosure while a puppy remained inside.

An employee named Jill who said she was the manager that evening told me that the puppies come from professional certified breeders. She said inspectors were always going to the breeders and they gave the store breeder information. She said that the puppies came from the Midwest and shook her head when asked if the dogs at the breeders were standing on wire and in horrible conditions. Jill said that she didn’t know if the breeders skipped breeding cycles. She said the breeder would know, but most breeders wont overbreed dogs in order to keep them healthy. She said that breeders are inspected by the State. She said that Ellen, Steve’s (the owners) wife ordered all the puppies and she knew where to get them. I pointed to the sign that explained where the puppies came from and asked Jill if that was where the puppies came from and she said ”yeah.”

I asked Jill for breeder information related to a specific puppy. She showed me a photo of the breeder/pup/parents, certificates of pedigree, vet check info, vaccination records and the dog license. There were no inspection reports. I asked Jill if there were inspection reports for the breeders and she said she was sure there are but the store didn’t have that paperwork.
